Data Intensive Computing- Many more scientific domains are increasingly creating huge data requirements from both their simulation and specific experimental activities. The focus of this thrust area will be on how data is shared and communicated among participating scientists – specifically examining the hardware and software infrastructure that is needed to effectively share large data sets.

First Byte Symposium, Heidelberg, Germany, May 26 2011

On May 26, 2011 a symposium was held on occassion of the 1st anniversary of the first byte on the Large Scale Data facility at BioQuant. Agenda and talks can be found here. Invited technical speakers were Steven Newhouse, director of the European Grid Inititiave (, Dieter Münk and Manuela Müller-Gerndt from IBM and Sven Eichelbaum, Geschäftsführer SVA System Vertrieb Alexander GmbH. Scientific speakers were Roland Eils, Rasmus Schröder, Holger Erfle, Jochen Wittbrodt from Heidelberg University, Jos van Wezel from KIT and Peter Lichter from DKFZ.
