Examine and trigger proteins in the living cell


Scientists from the BioQuant Center developed a novel method for the intracellular delivery of functional active proteins into living cells

Delivery of large and functionally active biomolecules across cell membranes presents a challenge in cell biological experimentation. An interdisciplinary team of biologists and physicists from Heidelberg, Ruben Bulkescher, Dr. Vytaute Starkuviene and Dr. Holger Erfle succeeded to develop a novel and scalable transfection platform that is suitable for the intracellular delivery of proteins into mammalian cells with preservation of their function. The method can be used for numerous application areas, ranging from antibody-mediated protein localization and antibody-mediated inhibition of protein function to CRISPR/Cas9 based gene editing in living cells, just to mention a few. The results of this research were published in the journal “Genome Research”.
