Project: Influence of extracellular environment on cellular dynamics and viral spread

Nils Bundgaard performed his Master thesis in Systems Biology in the group working on the analysis of HIV-1 spread within complex 3D ex vivo tissue culture systems. To this end, he developed mathematical and computational models providing a 3D representation of these complex environments. He used the FitMultiCell plattform (https://fitmulticell.gitlab.io/) to fit a cellular Potts model to experimental data obtained from live-cell imaging in tissue-like 3D culture systems to determine the spatio-temporal dynamics of individual cell-cell interactions that govern HIV-1 spread.

Currently, Nils is continuing his work as a research fellow within the group, working on the BMBF-funded project ExComPat-Covid19 to analyze the viral spread and associated pathology of SARS-CoV-2 within lung tissue. Here, he is developing models of lung epithelial tissue to analyze experimental data on the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 infection from tissue culture systems.
