Sixth International Workshop on Microscopic Image Analysis with Applications in Biology

Automated analysis and quantification of microscopy images plays an increasingly important role in biosciences and systems biology. Novel imaging devices enable to image biological systems at high spatial as well as temporal resolution, and produce vast amount of data, in particular, when using high-throughput technology. Since automatic analysis of the image data is challenging, sophisticated methods are necessary for extracting accurate and biologically meaningful information (e.g., phenotypic alterations in space and time).

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on the emerging interface of computational image analysis, biology, and systems biology. The focus will be on cutting edge image analysis methods for studying biological systems at different levels (e.g., sub-cellular, cellular, tissue, and whole organ level) and using different microscopy techniques (optical and electron microscopy). The topics comprise image reconstruction, segmentation, shape analysis, tracking, motion analysis, registration, and classification. Papers on image analysis for applications such as high-throughput screening for drug discovery, high-content analysis of neurobiological data, or disease-specific analysis of tissue arrays for pathology are welcome. In particular, we invite contributions that illustrate the use of image-based information for computational modeling, and that present examples of how this information enhances existing bioinformatics approaches.

Topics:

  • Image analysis algorithms for microscopy imaging
  • Bioimage informatics systems for microscopy imaging
  • Integration of microscopy images with other types of biomedical data including genomic data and ontologies
  • Computational systems biology based on microscopy imaging
  • Biomedical applications with quantitative image analysis
  • New and emerging high resolution imaging technology with applications in biomedicine
  • Data visualization methods and tools for large biomedical image datasets

The workshop will be held on the campus of the University of Heidelberg, Germany, in conjunction with the International Conference on Systems Biology (ICSB 2011). Previously, the MIAAB workshop was held 2009 in Bethesda (NIH Campus, MD, USA), 2008 in New York (NY, USA), 2007 in Piscataway (NJ, USA), and 2006 in Copenhagen (Denmark).

Organizers:
Karl Rohr (Univ. of Heidelberg and DKFZ, Germany)
Christophe Zimmer (Institut Pasteur, France)
Stephen Lockett (NIH, NCI, USA)
Hanchuan Peng (HHMI, USA)
Jens Rittscher (GE Global Research, USA)

Dates:

  • June 20, 2011 Submission of papers/abstracts
  • July 7, 2011 Notification of Acceptance
  • Sept. 2, 2011 Workshop

Submission Instructions:
We invite you to submit papers with original research describing recent advances in areas related to this workshop. All papers will undergo peer review by the conference program committee. Authors should submit full papers (4-6 pages, IEEE conference format). To encourage participation of biologists it is also possible to submit an abstract (IEEE format or other format).
